Art Lab: Kerry Hentges

January 17, 2018 - February 11, 2018

Kerry Hentges
On View January 17 – February 11, 2018
Reception: February 10, 2018

Layered Fears is an exploration of my fear of dying and the idea that there is nothing after we die. I have created sculpture and mixed media collage responding to this fear. Staircases are repeated throughout the work representing the depth of my fears. I start the day with a small level of fear but should my thoughts stray towards death, this fear goes deeper. I metaphorically descend the staircase of my fears. Through this collection of work I want to confront death and encourage a dialogue with viewers about death and what it means for life.

About the Artist
Kerry Hentges is an installation artist who utilizes sculpture, found objects, and book art to confront mortality and a persistent fear of dying. This fear motivates her studio practice and the practice helps her understand and ease that fear. According to Hentges, art is a way of understanding oneself and meditating on what is important. “Death is no surprise in life,” she says. “It is something that will one day take us all. In comparison, everything else seems insignificant.” The goal of her work, she continues, “is for others to understand my view of mortality and confront their own views.”
