W-5: Cheryl Wilson
My first solo show at the Workhouse is titled “Journey to Identity.” As an artist, I am often asked, “tell me your story.” Outside of the reason I started my art journey, I have learned that the journey to my own identity, is a journey of self-discovery. Self-discovery spans so many aspects of my life. I am asking, what is the purpose of my life and how am I putting that purpose into my art. How is the recent loss of my mother showing up in my art? How do my spiritual beliefs web color into my style? How is design influenced as I age? This journey includes, many emotions of self-reflecting, sometimes fearful moments, but many times bursts of inspiration when I paint with my entire body. I paint intuitively with passion and dedication to the process my art. This journey to identity is reflected in my painting.

I do not reflect my journey to my identity in any way negative, but each moment as beautiful stones layering the passion in my life. This passion is transformed into my art with contrasting layers of paint; the act of adding paint then taking away shapes; adding more depth with mediums, all leading to the abstracted shapes that reveal the layers of my journey. Some paintings are light and whimsical, others are dark and passionate; all a journey to my identity.
