DOWNLOAD: Exhibition Press Release

The Weight of Air is an immersive exhibition exploring ideas of growth and tenacity. Hanna Vogel’s delicate installation works address body and self-image reflected in the space we inhabit through physical and spatial consideration. By openly unveiling environmental vulnerabilities, these objects call on the viewer to examine the entropic nature of their own human makeup and its relationship to its surroundings.

“I find this idea—that our bodies and our self-images are affected by the spaces we inhabit—taking on new meaning within the context of the Workhouse Arts Center. I hope that in providing physically immersive and perhaps escapist experiences, my work can provide a counterpoint to the site’s history of incarceration.” – Hanna Vogel

Hanna Vogel is a Philadelphia-based artist, writer, and educator. Born and raised in rural northern California, she received a BFA from the California College of the Arts and an MFA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. In her art, she uses craft-based materials and techniques in non-traditional ways to make sculptures and installations. She has shown her work nationally and internationally; has presented at conferences; and published papers internationally. She has received fellowships/grants from Yaddo, Anderson Ranch, Haystack, Penland, the California College of the Arts, the Fiber Art Network, and Ringholz Studios, and will be a resident artist at Furman University, I-Park, and Sculpture Space in 2018.
