What Remains Behind
Lucy Burns Museum (Building 2)
On view June 14 – August 12, 2018
What Remains Behind features moments captured in early 2002 at the recently abandoned D.C. Correctional Facility at Lorton. That year, Fairfax County acquired much of the property of the former prison along with many of the buildings.
Photographer Dave Anglin was asked by Fairfax County to fulfill documentation requirements for the National Trust for Historic Preservation as well as to provide a permanent record of the prison immediately after it closed. The artistic value of the photos is Dave’s alone. These images of the Lorton prison hung for years on the office walls of former County Executive Edward Long who recently donated them to the Workhouse Arts Center.
The photos are a reminder of the empty shell left when the D.C. Correctional Facility closed in 2001. Buildings, however, filled with echoes of prisoners remembering a life outside their brick and razor wired dormitories, dreaming of the achievements of past heroes.
