Workhouse Clay International Ceramics Exhibition 2018

Exhibition Dates: August 11 – October 14, 2018
Opening Reception: August 10, 2018, 7p-9p

The Workhouse Arts Center is proud to present the Workhouse Clay International Ceramics Exhibition from August 11-October 14, 2018.

This exhibition represents the depth and breadth of contemporary functional and sculptural ceramic artworks being created throughout the country. Ceramic Artist and Educator –Eva Kwong juried over 500 images to select 60 pieces of art which incorporate a contemporary spirit as well as a technical mastery of the material. The show is a rare opportunity to see a variety of styles and techniques which encompass the field of contemporary ceramic arts.

Juror’s Statement

When I was assigned a beginning ceramics class in undergraduate school, I had a very limited view of what can be made from clay. I thought I would learn to make some bowls to eat from. Since then, I have seen the tremendous expansion of our ceramics field to include all types of work large and small as evident in the entries in this show.

I spent a whole week looking and relooking at all the images every day. I thought about what I saw every night. Some images reemerged repeatedly in my consciousness. Others ebbed and flowed. At the end of the week I chose what I thought were the strongest work that had a unique vitality along with deft handling of the materials. It was hard to whittle down from the larger batch that I had first chosen to this group due to gallery space.

I was energized and impressed by the marvelous diversity of content, processes, scale, techniques and craftsmanship. There were adroit trompe-l’oeil sculptures, masterful uses of glazes and firing techniques, artful pots that I would like to hold and use, beautifully painted surfaces, expressive figures and sensual abstract forms. I hope you will enjoy each and every piece as much as I did. Thank you to all who sent in their wonderful work!
