The Workhouse will welcome internationally acclaimed ceramic artist Mitch Lyons March 19-21! Since 1968 he has been pioneering his image-making from a slab of clay and has led over 100 workshops. About Clay Monotypes: A clay monoprint is an original print pulled from a slab of wet clay using colored clays, not inks. First, a slab of stoneware clay is rolled out and allowed to dry a little. Colored clay slips are mixed using China clay, water and permanent pigments. Slips are then brushed onto the slab, and over the other, using various techniques Mitch has developed over the 40 years.. A dampened paper is placed over the slab and rolled with a wooden rolling pin (the press). The pressure pulls a thin layer of clay from the surface of the slab. Because China Clay is inert and the pigments used are permanent and stable, the colored clay image remains intact. The art craft of clay monoprint is the process of taking a slab of wet colored clay, rolling it out, and then taking dampened paper and placing it over the clay using various techniques to produce colored clay images. About Mitch Lyons: Mitch Lyons earned his Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Ceramics from Tyler School of Art, and his Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree in Graphics from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. His clay monoprints can be found in numerous private and public collections throughout the United States, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Woodmere Museum, American University and the University of Delaware.
