In honor of contributions by women to arts and culture, the Virginia Commission for the Arts is presenting a statewide celebration titled MINDS WIDE OPEN: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts. Between March and June of 2010, thousands of public programs and events will occur throughout the state of Virginia that will highlight, introduce, commemorate, and celebrate women and their art. The Workhouse Arts Center will join in this celebration with two women-centered exhibitions that will celebrate Women's History Month in March 2010 and will also serve to kick off the Virginia Commission for the Arts' MINDS WIDE OPEN celebration in the Fairfax County area. MINDS WIDE OPEN: Celebrating Women IN Art and Design is a unique exhibition that will feature the talents and creativity of the Workhouse artists Kathleen Kendall, Stephanie O'Grady, Jackie France, Lorrie Herman, Charla Wilkerson, Sharon Mason, and Linda Carlson, and the design sensibilities of interior design professional June Shea of Shea Studio Interiors, Inc. June will work with the artists to create a space that is vibrant, unique, and alive using artistic works by women and about women. The exhibition runs March 3 - 17. The opening reception and the kick off to the MINDS WIDE OPEN celebration will be on Sunday, March 7 from 2-4pm. The reception will feature refreshments generously provided by Pink Bicycle Tea Room in Occoquan and sweets from Occasionally Cake in Alexandria. This FREE event is open to the public. Come and meet representatives from the Virginia Commission for the Arts who will talk about the MINDS WIDE OPEN project and meet the women whose work is being featured in both of these unique and exciting exhibitions. This exhibition will share gallery space with the 6 Abstract Women exhibition, which features the work of abstract artists Andrea Cybyk, Marcia Dale Dullum, Michele Hoben, Joyce McCarten, Jan Sherfy and Roberta Thole. 6 Abstract Women will be on display March 3-28.
