The Workhouse is proud to present not one, but two great performances Sunday, March 21 in honor of Women's History Month! The South County Secondary School Theatrical Arts Troupe will be performing The Remarkable Susan by Tim Kelly on Sunday, March 21 at 1 pm in Gallery Building W-16. The play is set in a courtroom in upstate New York during the late 19th Century, and features Susan B. Anthony, who is on trial for the crime of casting a ballot. Tempers flare, animosities run high and insults are traded as the fiery defendant of woman's rights challenges the ruling of the court--determined to resist bigotry and injustice. While Anthony's trial is basically a sham, she storms, and pleads and lectures. She skillfully turns defeat into victory--sounding a call for human dignity, which inevitably awakened the conscience of the nation.
Then, stay and join us at 2 pm in Gallery Building W-16, for Kate Campbell Stevenson's performance of Petticoats in Politics! With more than 25 years of professional experience in music, theatre and education, Stevenson will perform her awe-inspiring characterizations of early 20th Century women who led the fight for women's suffrage in this country. Petticoats in Politics has been performed in numerous venues around the world and has received rave reviews from all who have experienced Stevenson's talent. While touring the country performing Women: Back to the Future, she was alarmed by the void in general knowledge of women's history, particularly the fight for women's suffrage. She witnessed a nonchalant naiveté in today's women and young girls about the long struggle that earlier generations of women endured to win the right to vote. This compelled her to create an entertaining educational experience, Petticoats in Politics.
Petticoats in Politics uses music and theater to "encourage women to recognize their power in participating in the democratic process." In addition to filling in some of the gaps in suffrage history, it challenges modern women and young girls to become more active participants in the local, state and national political process. "For women's voices to be heard, more women need to run for office, serve on committees and learn how to advocate for issues they feel are important to improve our society, whether it's on local, state or national level," said Stevenson. The Workhouse is presenting Petticoats in Politics as part of MINDS WIDE OPEN: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts, a statewide celebration honoring women in the Commonwealth and their contribution to the arts.
