**The opening reception for all studio shows and featured artists listed below will be held campus-wide in conjunction with the 2nd Saturday Art Walk, September 11  from 6-9 pm.**

Building W-4 Featured Artist: Judy Zatsick

Painter Judy Zatsick has created a series of small, vivid, oil pastels entitled "Tree Forms: Light, Shadow and Line", from her studies of trees in the Belgian countryside. Many of her images come from time spent in the former hunting grounds of the King of Belgium, which have been preserved as public parks.

Building W-5 Featured Exhibition: "Art of Passion" featuring Maureen Wolford, Nancy Hannans and Julia Dzikiewicz

Featured artists Maureen Wolford, Nancy Hannans and Julia Dzikiewicz invite you into each of their passions for the exhibition, Art of Passion. The exhibit will run from September 8 - October 3 and feature original paintings in encaustic, acrylics and oils.

Maureen Wolford has an affection and excitement for the spirit, sounds, shapes and colors of nature. Nancy Hannans has a reverence for the wisdom and beauty of women and celebrates their human spirit. Julia Dzikiewicz has a deep concern for our planet, politics and humanity. All three artists come together to bring you colorful impact, mysterious symbolism and the wonders of nature. The opening reception for this exhibition will be held in conjunction with the 2nd Saturday Art Walk and will feature guitarist, Stephen Wolford.

Description of Show/Artist statement:

Passion is the fire in our eyes in our bodies and in our lives that drive us forward.

"There is no end and there is no beginning
There is only the passion of life
Passion is universal humanity
Passion is the genesis of genius
Follow your passion and success will follow you!"

Building W-6 Featured Artist: Terry Anstrom

The theme for the paintings by September featured artist, Terry Anstrom, is "Burst of Color". Terry captures the richness of color and light from what she sees in her environment. She paints watercolors of flowers and fauna to express her appreciation of nature. She finds painting on 140 pound cold press paper the best way to define the watercolor's brilliance with color glazes, layering of color to build up the softness of color and the blending of granulating background washes. She enhances her paintings by using various techniques of lifting and negative painting, while creating illusions in the background with softness of hues and dramatic tones of color. Terry perceives flowers and fauna close-up and invites the viewer to analyze the harmony of the colors, the touching light, and details of the flower's form in her composition.

Building W-7 Featured Artist: Matt Climer

Featured artist Matt Climer says, "Glass peaked my interest when I first saw the time and effort that went into creating glass objects. Since then flame-worked art glass has become a consuming discipline for me. Like any discipline glass has had a profound impact on my life. It has taught me about myself, nature, and the value of dedicating oneself to an artistic discipline."

Building W-8 Studio Exhibition: Ceramics Resident Artists

Workhouse Artists Association Featured Artist: Kathy Guzman

Born and raised in Northern Virginia, Kathy Guzman's exposure to art began early - being in close proximity to the abundant resources of the Nation's Capital provided the opportunity for many school field trips to various museums and galleries. Guzman's encouragement goes back in time to her high school art teacher, Ray Wilkins. With his help, she applied for and received a semester scholarship at the Corcoran School of Art in 1973 where her painting instructor was Gene Davis. As all of the students around her were pouring paint on raw canvas on the floor, she was creating landscapes and figure paintings.

Guzman worked full time for the local county government from 1976 until her retirement in January of 2006. She continued her creative growth while working full time and raising her family by remaining as active as possible. She attended painting classes at a local studio, participated in outdoor art fairs in Herndon and Fairfax and continued and then finished her art education at college.  For six years she organized, hung and participated in an art exhibition at the Fairfax County Government Center. Since retiring, she has been able to finally devote the time to her art that she has always dreamed of.

Kathy is currently a member of Gallery West, a co-op gallery in Alexandria, Virginia and has been an Associate Artist at the Workhouse since it opened in 2008.
