Home for Dinner is a simple phrase that can signify many things, such as family, laughter, conversation, tradition, favorite foods – just to name a few. For some individuals and families in southeast Fairfax County, “home for dinner” may not have a positive association.  Perhaps the family is struggling to afford rent to stay in their home or trying to keep food on the table.  The exhibit will consist of art from sixth grade students in local elementary schools.

The Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC) and the Workhouse Arts Center are collaborating on the exhibition to help raise awareness about hunger and homelessness in southeast Fairfax County. Home for Dinner will showcase how community members can make a difference, and it will provide a little friendly competition between elementary schools with a food drive. LCAC, an independent human services non-profit organization, works to prevent homelessness and to ensure that local individuals and families have food for dinner (and all other meals, too!)

Visitors to the exhibit are encouraged to bring canned food to leave in the gallery as a donation to be shared with families in need. Two awards will be given to participants; an Artist Choice award selected by a Workhouse artist, and a People’s Choice award selected by visitors to the Workhouse. Winners will be announced on November 29th at the Black Friday event at the Workhouse.
