Statement

The inspiration for my work is derived from diverse cultural and artistic sources as well as from the colors, textures and surfaces created by my materials. My techniques are constantly evolving as I explore the range of design opportunities inherent in fiber art. Sometimes I work spontaneously and, at other times, I carefully plan a project. I am always ready to adapt to the accidental touch created by the materials themselves.

Bio

Fiber artist Joan Hutten enjoys experimenting with the variety of materials and techniques available in her craft. Knit wire jewelry, a hand woven rain poncho made with recycled plastic bags, a shawl constructed of bits of antique and contemporary lace and trims, and felted wool beads and hats are some of the unique products of her creativity.
Joan's education includes a BA in Studio Art and an MA in Art History. She has worked in commercial galleries, as an art consultant to Washington area businesses and taught extensively, including courses in fiber arts at Old Dominion University. On the Fairfax public access TV show, “Our Place”, Joan offered a program in Japanese Kumihimo Braiding and demonstrated Kool Aid Dyeing. Her art work was selected for publication in the Fiber Arts Design Book Four, a collection of outstanding fiber art.
Regionally, Joan exhibits regularly at the Potomac Fiber Arts Gallery in the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria.
