Statement

Landscape and narrative co-exist in Joy Every's expressive oil paintings which draw heavily on images from the subconscious and universal symbolic content. The landscapes which anchor these paintings play with formal aspects of space - composition, anthropomorphism and pattern. Equally important is the focus on the concepts of time and memory. Joy draws on memories of a place rather than painting "plein air" in order to portray an idealized or metaphorical version of the landscape and its elements - a sense of mystery.
