Statement

My name is Mike Minnery, and I have anger management issues. I am a welder/metal fabricator by day. On days when the beltway traffic is more than I can stand, I take out my frustrations on a poor piece of metal. My teachers always thought I would end up in Lorton--I am so glad to be here at the Workhouse Arts Center as an artist and not a prisoner!

I work exclusively in metal, usually aluminum or stainless steel. Sometimes I begin with a sketch, but most of the time, my mind goes blank and my hands take over. I enjoy experimenting with different patterns and textures. I like the look of polished, raw metal, but usually I'm compelled to experiment with color. I apply multiple layers of electrostatic powder coating. This type of finish is often used in commercial applications and is very resiliant. Therefore my finished pieces are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. I take pride in creating something that is as durable as it is beautiful.

It is gratifying to take an idea and pursue it until it becomes what I have imagined. Compliments and appreciation for my work fuel me to push forward and continue to create new and unique methods to transform metal into objects of beauty. I hope you like my work as much as I enjoyed creating it!
