Statement

Terry creates images of what she loves in nature. She paints watercolors of flowers and fauna to express her appreciation of nature, the richness of color and light portrayed in her surroundings. She finds painting on 140 lb cold press paper the best way to define the watercolor's brilliance with color glazes, layering of color to build up the softness of color, and the blending of granulating background washes. She tries to enhance her paintings by using various techniques of lifting and negative painting, while creating illusions in the background with softness of hues and dramatic tones of color. Terry perceives flowers and fauna close-up and invites the viewer to analyze the harmony of the colors, the touching light, and details of the flower's form in her composition. Recently, Terry has experimented with watercolors on canvas after taking classes and workshops from artists I admire. She utilizes the technique of painting background color first and allowing the canvas to dry completely. The next step involves creating the details of the flower by adding layers of color and lifting color from the background to define the petals and flower's form. Darker hues are added for shadows. Terry enjoys walking through a garden to smell the flowers, to see what she likes, to feel a sense of passion for creating. Then, she paints her artwork as an expression of what she sees.

Bio

Terry's interest in art began in elementary school in Colorado where her drawings were selected for local library showings. During the first interval of her life, she displayed her expertise predominantly using the left-side of her brain with a career in mathematics and research. For many years, her creative nature was tapped into the fields of crafts such as quilting, needlework and gourmet cooking. Periodically, when time permitted between children and a career as a teacher and research professional, her right-brain started to dominate. She enrolled in watercolors classes at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs and the University of Mississippi in Oxford. In her semi-retired status, she began her development in watercolors by taking watercolors classes from artists she admired at the Torpedo Factory and the Lorton Art Center. Her love of flowers is reflected in paintings of flora in their environment and close-up views. Although painting more seriously for only two years, Terry is committed to pursuing artistic expression in her watercolor paintings and branching out into new techniques on canvas with an instructor (one-on-one). As she and her husband travel and photograph flora and sites in Australia, Italy, Alaska, Ecuador, Vancouver, and other golf destinations, Terry enjoys capturing the color and light of flowers and fauna through her watercolor paintings.
