Wayne Guenther was raised in a musical family and took a degree in Music Education (string specialist) in 1966. Directly after graduation he entered the Army, and stayed for a 22-year career in logistics plans and operations. On his first assignment in Germany he acquired a 35mm camera and a few lenses and began his life-long avocation in photography.
Those early years were significantly influenced by association with the Hanau recreation services photo lab manager who was both helpful in teaching B&W printing and image composition, and a group of like-minded enthusiasts who photographed every weekend and critiqued the following Thursday. Mastery of the camera functions and improvement in technique came from practice, critical feedback, then more practice.
In 1994 he juried into Gallery West, the Alexandria VA artist cooperative, and started his professional fine art photography career. He mounted four solo shows there over his eleven-year relationship, which developed his ability to conceive and produce a coherent body of work. Acceptance in multiple open juried shows in the region and across the country increased during the late 90's, to include The Art League of Alexandria where he has been a “bin gallery” artist for ten years. A founding member of the Workhouse Photographic Society, Wayne's photographs can now viewed at the Lorton Arts Foundation W6 Gallery Wednesday through Sunday.
Polaris Photography was started in 1992 and over the years has morphed into a general purpose commercial photography shop operated full-time out of his home. He still enjoys roaming with his camera looking for interesting images, many of which have significant graphics content of curves and angles, isolated subjects, and reflections. Wayne shoots with Nikon digital equipment and makes archival pigmented prints with an Epson 4880 inkjet printer.
