A tour in Iraq, 2004, with the Bushmasters of Bravo Company––mechanized infantrymen from the US Army’s 1st Infantry Division (“The Big Red One”).
They ride, stuffed in the dark belly of an armored mammoth, called The Bradley Fighting Vehicle––its grinding tracks roaring like a jackhammer beneath them. They ride, they wait… could be minutes, could be hours––they smoke, they sleep, they eat––and they never know where the hell they are… until the ramp drops. And, eventually, the ramp does drop… and it drops over and over and over. Out of the belly, they spill into the unknown––immediately contrasting with the cradle of civilization––and they navigate the combat carnival.
