Karen Abbott is our July Featured Artist for Building 7! Learn more about her and her work below.
Since the time when I could follow my Grandmother around in her garden, selecting flowers to cut, I have had an obsession with flowers. This grouping reflects that obsession. I challenged my self to created life size replicas of selected flowers using powders and frit. In all but a couple exceptions, I actually worked with live flowers to achieve my ends. The two exception are the pansies and the pussywillow. Although full-size , the actual flowers themselves did not lend themselves to the process and replicas had to be sculpted by hand.
After retiring for the second time,Karen decided she now had the time to pursue her passion for glass. Karen had done stained glass for the last twenty years and now had the opportunity to explore other aspects of her chosen medium. To that end, in flame working Karen studied under Kathryn Lagassey, Deborah Gibson, Rob Kincheloe, Kristina Logan, Suellen Fowler,Corinna Tetinger, Stephanie Sersich, and Joy Munshower.
In Kiln working, she has studied under Sandy Martina, Rhonda Gilbert, Nancy Weisser, Alica Lomne, Alyssey Oxley, Mark Abilgaard, Evelyn Dunstan, Sayaka Suzuki, Paul Messina, and Shinichi Higuchi. In stained glass, Karen hasstudied under Jeannie Dunivan, Robert Oddy, Peadar Lamb and Stephen Byrne. Karen continues to explore her medium with enthusiasm.
