On this day 109 years ago, 33 suffragists arrived at our site—then known as the Occoquan Workhouse—where they were met with violence. After requesting political prisoner status, Superintendent W.H. Whittaker ordered guards to brutalize the women, throwing them into filthy cells in the men’s facility.
This special tour explores the broader suffrage movement with a focused look at the infamous "Night of Terror," a turning point in the fight for women’s voting rights. Join us to honor these courageous figures and reflect on the tremendous sacrifices made in the pursuit of equality.
