In April 2023, war erupted in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Now in its fourth year, the conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced roughly 14 million more (currently the largest displacement crisis in the world) and left over half the population facing severe hunger, according to the United Nations and International Organization for Migration. Widespread human rights abuses, the destruction of hospitals and infrastructure, and a near-total telecommunications blackout have compounded the suffering, leading the International Rescue Committee to call it the biggest humanitarian crisis ever recorded.

From Hand to Heart brings that story into focus through the eyes of the Sudanese diaspora, featuring artistic work that elevates the lived experience of Sudanese people during this conflict, with particular attention to the women who have carried its weight. The exhibition portrays these women as the architects of emotional resilience amid catastrophe, showing how they have built and sustained the story of collective survival.

Moving Forward Sudan has spent the past thirteen years working to unify and empower the Sudanese diaspora, with programming centered on the DMV region, home to nearly 10,000 Sudanese community members. The organization is honored to stand in community with Sudanese artists across the diaspora, elevating their voices and reminding the world that their story is far from forgotten.
