Theater, Music & Comedy Performances
About the
Workhouse Theatre
-
The Workhouse Theatre is a proud part of the Workhouse Arts Center, dedicated to presenting full seasons of musicals, dramas, new works, and cabarets year-round.
We are proud to provide opportunities for local performers, musicians, designers, and theatre technicians. Our intimate, black box theater seats approximately 100 audience members and is transformed show to show with the hard work and ingenuity of our contracted builders and designers. Our performers come from all over the DMV, each bringing with them talent, expertise, and dedication. We care deeply about live theater in every regard, and the valuable impact of communities gathering together for shared experiences that both entertain and inspire.
-
To develop and maintain a theatrical venue that employs performing artists and supports their creative growth, while engaging our local community through access to high-quality live theatrical performances. It is our vision to give big shows new life in an intimate space; to challenge ourselves with creative problem-solving; and to make our theater a place where we are our best selves.
-
The Workhouse Theatre has received 19 Helen Hayes nominations, with hundreds of performing artists gracing our stage each year, and thousands of audience members coming through our doors.
-
The Workhouse Theatre presents four mainstage shows each season, generally three musicals and one drama. Each show holds auditions prior to production and are open to all non-equity performers, 18 and older. From time to time, we do cast young performers for age-appropriate characters, and all audition notices will state all ranges.
Each season we will announce an open call for Director submissions. Our season is selected in-house and currently we do not have the ability to accept submissions for new works, though we look forward to offering that opportunity in the future.
Design teams are all open for each production. If you have a background in Direction, Choreography, Music Direction, Lighting/Sound Design, Fight/Intimacy, Hair/make-up, Costume Design, Stage Management, Scenic Design, Sound Design, Projection, and Theater Carpentry, we want to hear from you! You are always welcome to reach out to us and share your interest in joining a production.
-
Each production runs for 6 weekends, with an average of 17 shows. Generally, shows are Friday evenings at 8 PM, Saturday evenings at 8 PM, and Sunday matinees at 2 PM. In our 2026 - 2027 season, we will offer Saturday matinees for our production of Camelot, opening in Dec. 2026. Please be sure to check each show listing for specific show dates and times.
Parking is ample and free! The campus and the theater are ADA accessible. Please contact the Performing Arts Department staff with any specified needs.
Currently we do not offer ASL or closed caption performances, though we are very driven to add this important feature to our program. If you are experienced in presenting Theatrical ASL, please introduce yourself to us!

Evil Dead the Musical
Five college students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods, and accidentally unleash an evil force that turns them all into demons. It’s all up to Ash (a housewares employee, turned demon-killing hero), and his trusty chainsaw to save the day. Blood flies. Limbs are dismembered. Demons tell bad jokes… and all to a rockin' musical score.
