From 2019 to 2021, artists Kate Fleming and Tom Woodruff traveled to all 50 states to document and better understand America. Kate captured the reality of the American landscape through small, postcard-sized oil paintings on paper. Tom recorded the anxiety and bizarreness of the time through subtle, complex, and often confusing digital photographs. Throughout their journey, Kate and Tom drove over 46,000 miles in their 2000 Ford Econoline van, Connie, and flew to both Hawaii and Alaska. They navigated car troubles, pandemic interruptions, extreme weather, and the endless heartbreak of falling in love with and leaving a new place every other day.
