“TOGETHER” is a partly documentary exhibition about process and the power of artists working collectively. Historically, artists have collaborated since the very beginning. As far back as 45,000 years ago, Paleolithic artists painted cave murals as group projects. Early humans recognized that real strength (and survival) comes from working as a pack. During the Medieval period, artists developed specialties such as calligraphy, gold leaf and portraiture. They created manuscripts, like an assembly line, in monasteries. Renaissance workshops painted frescoes together through a kind of apprenticeship program: young aspiring artists learning from the expertise of Masters. Today is no different. Modern artists including Duchamp, Man Ray, Jasper Johns, Rauschenberg, de Kooning, Warhol, and Basquiat have all collaborated on projects together.
In this exhibition, I share my experiences working with a community of artists from all different media and disciplines: painters, sculptors, carpenters, musicians, dancers and performers, lighting, costume, props and audio designers. It has been the honor of my life to work with so many passionate, talented, and dedicated colleagues. I hope that, just for a moment, we can set aside the toxic, divisive tone in our country and focus on the beauty of being “Together” as a community.
Tim is a resident Workhouse artist. With a solid foundation in conventional media, Tim’s artwork includes drawing, painting, mixed media, mural and scenic arts.
His educational background includes undergraduate degrees in Visual Arts and Design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Point Park University. He completed his education with a master’s degree in art history from the University of Pittsburgh. After college, Tim built a career in large-scale murals and scenic arts. He has created commission-based work from prestigious clients including: the National Air and Space Museum, Fairfax County, the Wolf Trap Foundation and the National Wildlife Federation, among others. Some of his public murals can be found in many of the Fairfax County REC Centers.
For the past 16 years, Tim has been the in-house set designer and scenic artist for Manassas Ballet Theater. His work is displayed at the Hylton Performing Arts Center and has set the stage for productions of “The Nutcracker”, “Don Quixote”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Giselle”, “Cinderella”, “Sleeping Beauty” and more.
He has also painted numerous sets for local theaters including Synetic, Next Stop, Olney Theater Center and the Workhouse Theater.
