Powerful documentary photography exhibition offers a rare historical glimpse into rehabilitation efforts at the former Lorton Reformatory.
LORTON, VA (September 8, 2026)— Workhouse Arts Center is proud to present TRANSFORMATIONS: Documenting the Pilot Substance Abuse Program at Lorton Reformatory, 1989–1991, a poignant photographic exhibition by renowned photographer Lloyd Wolf. The exhibition will be on view from September 12 through November 7, 2026, in the McGuireWoods Gallery (Building W-16, 2nd Floor).
A Reception will take place on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, providing visitors with an opportunity to view the exhibition and engage with the artist.
Between 1989 and 1991, photojournalist Lloyd Wolf gained behind-the-scenes access to document a groundbreaking, pilot drug rehabilitation and substance abuse treatment program operating inside the former Lorton Reformatory—Washington, D.C.’s primary correctional facility at the time. Originally featured as a cover story for the Washington City Paper in 1990, Wolf’s empathetic lens captured the raw human stories of recovery, vulnerability, and resilience among incarcerated individuals striving for personal change within the penal system.
The exhibition holds special historical resonance as it is presented on the historic grounds of the former Lorton Correctional Complex, which closed in 2001 and has since been repurposed into the vibrant Workhouse Arts Center. By presenting these historical images where the events took place, TRANSFORMATIONS bridges local history, public policy, and visual storytelling.
"Exhibiting Lloyd Wolf's documentary work at the Workhouse connects our current identity as an incubator for the arts directly to the complex history of the site we occupy. With 2026 marking 25 years since the prison closed, it is doubly significant," said Katie Crook, Director of Museum and Visitor Experience at Workhouse Arts Center. "TRANSFORMATIONS reminds us of the power of visual documentation to preserve human dignity and highlight stories of personal redemption and humanity."
